Motorcycling In Winter: Know Your Risks

You may love hitting the road on your motorcycle. But, as we head into the winter, the dangers you may face while riding usually change. Cold temperatures, inclement weather and hazardous road conditions might make biking risky. Winter bike accidents could harm the rider, their equipment and others.

So, before you decide to ride in the winter, see first if it’s safe to do so. Take the time to prepare your bike and safety equipment, and always ride with care.

Before Riding

Motorcyclists likely understand that their bikes are more sensitive than the average car. Therefore, operating them takes expertise. Before you decide to ride, take the time to get ready. Biking usually requires more preparation than just hopping in the car.

1. Check and maintain your motorcycle’s vital systems. If you don’t maintain your engine, oil systems or sensitive parts, these could break down while you ride. Indeed, cold weather can often impact the smooth functioning of a bike’s internal systems. It might increase the risk of an operational problem.

2. Look at the weather reports for your intended routes. Inclement weather like snow, rain and even wind make for hazardous riding conditions. As your bike is a two-wheeled vehicle, it likely requires much more precision to operate. Bad weather may make operating difficult, and might raise your risks of an accident. If you feel you can't safely control the bike, it's usually best not to ride. a man riding a snowboard down a snow covered slope

3. Gather protective equipment for your ride. You should always wear a helmet regardless of whether your state’s laws require it. Also consider wearing strong, sturdy shoes and pads during your ride. Furthermore, wear warm clothes and remain insulated while riding in cold temperatures. Remember, motorcycles expose their riders to the wind. Prolonged exposure might raise the biker’s risks of severe illness like hypothermia.

During Your Ride

If you make the right preparations to ride, you can hit the road knowing you have safety in mind. Still, while you ride, always remain aware of certain seasonal hazards around you.

Ride with care and realize that weather conditions might change at any time. Also keep a close eye on your bike and your own safety while riding. Don’t be afraid to take breaks to ensure both you and your bike remain in top condition. When you hit the road again, maintain a safe distance between yourself and other drivers.

Additionally, make sure to review your motorcycle insurance. You need this coverage just like you need auto insurance. If you need more resources on policies, talk to one of our insurance agents today.
